The Goal of UAYSFA is
To provide a space and create exciting learning opportunities in a studio atmosphere where teens and pre-service teachers can work side by side as visual artists in small collaborative groups once each week to explore personal, social, and political issues through practices in contemporary art. As a result of these collaborations participants will create well-crafted, conceptually grounded works of meaningful art that will add to their portfolios for entrance into colleges, art institutes, universities, and graduate programs focused on studio art and art education. At the end of each 12 week session The United Action for Youth will sponsor a large exhibition for participants to showcase their efforts.
The primary focus of each group will be based on a big idea such as:
Peace/War/Love/Family/Home/Gender/Acceptance/Nature/Ecology/Political Strife/Consumption/Waste/Mapping/Boundaries/Borders/The Body/Storytelling/Memory/Imagined Worlds/Fiction and Fantasy/Music/Identity/Street Life/Humor/Happiness/Childhood/Memorials/Death, Life, and Aging/Neighborhoods/Revolution/Democracy/Population growth/decline/Virtual life/the electronic dimension of Identity
